The Official Google Review Of 2011

Here it is, the Google review of 2011 through search.  According to peoples tapping fingers 2011 has been a year of adversity, crossroads, revolution, remembrance, possibility and inspiration.  Revealed at Zeitgeist 2011 the video goes head to head with Bings Review of 2011 (which doesn’t include December!) and combined sums up the last 12 months beautifully.  Enjoy.

Bing Search : A Year In Review (2011)

I’m pretty sure the next 4 weeks will be dominated by Christmas campaigns and 2011 review videos like this one from Bing.  Curiously they released this in November insinuating that Bing or Microsoft as a whole don’t recognise the month of December!  The video covers the most searched terms that have shaped the last year from the devastating Tsunami that shook Japan to the sad passing of Steve Jobs.  It’s both a reminder of the breakthrough and heartbreaks that we have all experience in 2011 and a springboard to a fresh start in 2012.

Anti-Slavery Campaign Uses Facebook To Make Their Cause Relevant For Today

How do you make an anti-slavery message relevant today? Definitely a conundrum but one I think JWT London have cracked with this online film for the charity, Anti-Slavery International.  Using the familiar functionality and features of Facebook, ‘Lala’ the unpaid domestic servant living in London provides a glimpse into the lonely and often desperate life of a modern-day slave.  Lala is seen as having no Facebook friends and no hope of escaping her miserable life until the film ends and Anti-Slavery International adds her as a friend.  Visit their website to take action.

Ikea YouTube Campaign Asks Viewers To Find A Single Frame

To help generate some summer buzz and excitement Ikea Belgium created an interactive YouTube game called ‘Catch the Swedish light’. Based around the Swedish tradition of celebrating Mid Summers Eve and the season of eternal sunshine 48 YouTube videos were created featuring unique codes stamped on each frame. Each video featured a series of Ikea products with a beam of sunlight happily dancing around them. Within a single frame of the video the sunlight hits one of the products at which point viewers could take the unique code displayed and enter it into a competition to win the piece of furniture in question.

Grand Theft Auto has become one of the most valuable game franchises in the world and the next installment is well under way at Rockstar North.  To wet your appetite and provide a little entertainment this Monday check out the first official trailer.  The mindless violence and carnage seems to have been replaced with a slightly more intelligent and thoughtful approach to crime!

eBay Opens QR Code Powered Store Front In New York

Whats that you say?  Browsing eBay online is too easy and you wished they made it more complicated and confined it to a single store in New York?  Well its your lucky day because thats exactly what they’ve done with the eBay ‘Inspiration Room’ concept store.  Located in New York any passer-by can stop, scan the QR code (with their mobile phone) of any item they have taken a liking to and be taken to a purchasing page with more information!  Sarcasm aside, the idea does have merit, but in my opinion its real niche is for existing physical retailers to offer a more stress-free and streamlined purchase process.  The opposite transition from virtual to bricks and mortar store doesn’t seem to add any value to the shopping experience.

Bananas Are Back People, Get Excited!

For those outside of Australia the headline will probably mean nothing to you, but here in Australia it’s a big deal, a REALLY BIG deal.  To give you some context, at the start of the year Cyclone Yasi wiped out the seasons Banana harvest in Queensland devastating the epicentre of the Australian Banana industry. This left the growers with no income for most of the year, and Banana lovers around the country (foreign imports are banned) with high prices, bad quality and an increasingly limited supply.

But the good news is that bananas are now back, the crop has recovered, awesome high quality bananas are flooding supermarkets and retailers and those high (up to $17 per KG!) prices are coming back down.  To celebrate, my team lead by @OllyWilton (follow him) have put together a less than conventional program to relaunch the humble banana!

The first step was to re-engage with our existing communities whos consideration and we are sad to say ‘love’ for the great Aussie banana had fallen over the last 9 months.  First our Facebook community got a massive update and we joined twitter tackling the existing banana conversation head [Read more...]

The New VW Beetle Jumps Off A Billboard In This Cool Augmented Reality Campaign

The launch of the all new Volkswagen Beetle needed to be as fun as the car itself.  With all new aggressive styling, a massively upgraded interior and that same cheeky personality the advertising needed to literally jump off the page.  Funnily enough that’s exactly what the auto maker and Red Urban have done.  Using a custom augmented reality iOS app every billboard/poster is packed full of hidden interactive goodness.  Simply hold up the phones viewfinder (while running the app) over the VW Beetle panel and BOOM!  Its certainly an innovative take on the traditional outdoor format and brings the Beetle to life in exactly the right way but I do have concerns over the number of people willing to take the time or make the effort to fully experience the campaign.

The Runners Remix by Nike

I love Nike.  I don’t love running.  If Nike can motivate me to run (and enjoy it!) I’ll probably love them more!  Ellie Goulding has teamed up with Nike to produce a great film around her love for running.  The background music (which sounds awesome) is a song called ‘Under The Sheets’ and definitely embodies the energy that a great running sound track can offer.  In fact Ellie is producing a custom 30 minute track called ‘Runnin Into The Light’ which is mixed to be the perfect score for runners to jog to.  Combine that with the superb Nike+ and suddenly the Nike running strategy takes real shape – Utility, Footwear, Clothing and a healthy does of motivation.  Jog on people!

The First Eco-Friendly Phone Charger Using Bugs!

Something light and easy to start off Monday with.  Snapdragon, the mobile processor by Qualcomm decided to create a ‘Bug Circus’ with the sole intention of charging the battery on their mobile phone!  Seems strange but imagine if all you needed each night to recharge you mobile was a tarantula, scorpion, praying mantis, dung beetle and pair of hissing cockroaches!  Who wouldn’t disown their energy provider in favour of insect power?  Yup, didn’t think so!  Regardless, its still an entertaining piece of content, enjoy!
